Good place to drink at the end of a long week, where there’s lots of room to mix and mingle. Located down near Britomart the bar is obviously handy to the train station, but also well placed for a quick dash to nearby Chinese restaurants for a bit between drinks. I haven’t eaten anything from 1885, but they offer an extensive menu that looks delicious. I’ve always just thought of the place more as somewhere to drink is all. 1885 is well laid out and airy, so it doesn’t get too hot even when packed full of people. The lighting strikes the right balance between atmospheric and well-lit, so you can see what you’re doing and who you’re talking to, without feeling like you under the spotlight.
