Altar is a little off the beaten track - about 100m up the road from the main Mt. Eden shops. As such, you're unlikely to stumble upon it, but it's well worth the extra effort and - BONUS - there's free car parking. Housed in an old villa, Alter is light and airy, with plenty of inside seating and a nice sheltered outside courtyard. They serve a wide variety of counter food and also have good selection of cooked meals, including a few interesting things like vol au vents. In my experience the service has always been friendly and efficient too. Definitely one of the better cafes in an area filled with good cafes.
I came here with my husband and our little children recently. We had an awesome time, the window seat table is set away from the other diners so it's very family-friendly, my daughter loves the toys there, and the food is excellent. It's extremely well-priced and the staff are all helpful and really lovely, and patient even with long, complicated orders. Also since it functions as an all-day kitchen there is no awkward time to dine here. When it first opened we were here all the time for weekend brunches and work lunches, or just for coffee, and even with a change of owner it seems to have kept up its standards and for that I'm grateful. I think it's a fantastic option for a quick dessert or a special coffee if you're walking through Mount Eden in the evening. The dessert platter is pretty stellar, comes with hot chocolates to boot. A steal! Will be back, again and again. Although I keep meaning to check that they do use free-range eggs and bacon, does anyone know?
