I haven't eaten at Altar - this is just a coffee rating. It's a high-end place, and I think its flat white is the best best going in Mt Eden - yet it's only $3 for a large. Great value.

I was slight worried about going to the place for 2 reasons,   one its slightly in a weird position down a few hundred metres from the Mt Eden shops and in an old house like building and two,   I had a grab one voucher for a 3 course meal for $15 -  which sounds a bit cheap - not to mention when I bought it ,  they had sold 40,  no big deal with 40  - however by the end of the day they had sold nearly 2200!    That can be a recipe for disaster trying to get a booking or quality wise in some places.   But after going last night,  couldn't have been more wrong,   rang up at 3pm made a booking for that night no problem,  the guy was friendly and helpful on the phone.    It helps the seem to have some crazy opening hours  - 7am - 10pm - 7 days,  geez.   When I got there he greeted us at the door and took us to our table and was very kind and attentive towards us and also to our 1yr old .    I was looking through the menu - despite ours being set and they seem to have some really interesting stuff there,  stuff we will have to go back and try -  sure they have standard stuff,  but a lot of it sounded a bit different.   Which is all good.  As for our meal,  it was great,  very tasty,  quite unique (hadn't had fried risotto balls before) and overall very good.     Service was great and environment relaxed.     Standard prices on the menu,  looked very reasonable .      So all together - very good.  I'm not the ideal voucher customer (for businesses) preferring to try the next place for cheap than come back to previous places at full price,  but Altar cafe is one place we will definitely be coming back to .   Check it out.

I haven’t been here before. But have been twice this week now as it’s just up the road from work. What a great spot. A cafe in a beautiful old my Eden building just outside of the village so lots of parking right outside. We walked in and were greeted with a friendly hello. The food and more importantly was great. What impressed me was for the second visit we were greeted with with a cheery ‘back again!’ and the waiter asked if we wanted the same drinks as last time. It’s not that quiet but he’d remembered from 2 days ago. We tried two different dishes and the food was of the same high standard. So if you looking for a nice quiet cafe, with great food and coffee which is close to Mt Eden but not caught in the hard to find parks, hustle and bustle of the Mt Eden village then this is the spot!
