Anaura Bay is located 75 km north of Gisborne between Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay. The crescent shaped bay boasts a magnificent white sandy beach surrounded by native bush covered hills. Considered to be one of the best in the region, it is suitable for swimming, boating, diving and fishing with a couple of holiday homes and campsites nearby.

Steeped in local history, this was the 2nd landing point for Captain Cook where he was welcomed by local Maori in 1769.

Enjoy the walkway which begins at the Anaura Bay Scenic Reserve, or check out the rare painted meeting house at the Anaura Marae.

About an hour and half drive from Gisborne both private and Department of Conservation (DoC) campsites service this beautiful sheltered bay. The cost-effective DoC campsite is adjacent to the beach alongside a stream, surrounded by forest and coastal bush. Toilets are not provided so campers must have a chemical toilet and boil the water before drinking. There’s swimming, walking on the Anaura Bay Walkway at the northern end and more extensive tramping on the Mt Hikurangi Track, 80km north or Cooks Cove walkway 20km south. The Anaura Bay Family Motor Camp is also beachside and has a store and full amenities.

This DoC camp opens on Labour Weekend, and singles are welcome – dogs that is. Set on a beautiful beach alongside a stream, overlooking Motuoroi Island, it’s surrounded by coastal forest. Although 85km north of Gisborne, with the last 4km down a gravel road, it’s beauty overrides the basic facilities – you need to have access to a chemical toilet and all water must be boiled. Chill out, swim or walk the two-hour Anaura Walkway.
