Back Beach is an unspoiled beach located just south of New Plymouth in the northern part of the Tapuae Marine Reserve. A popular surfing spot, the 1 to 3.5 metre swells make it ideal for surfers of all ability levels.
The picturesque black sand beach is a great place to walk your dog, and it offers fabulous views of the sugar loaf island where seals can often be seen on the rocky areas. Kids enjoy running and bodyboarding down the sand dunes in the summer months, while swimming, boating and kayaking can be dangerous at times.
Parking is available in the car park next to the Herekawe Stream.

I feel like Back Beach is somewhere that has something for everyone. Whether it’s the waves for surfing, the hot black sand for sunbathing, or for your dog to give them an energetic run around; the only thing it’s missing is an ice cream stand! They only thing I can warn is to keep an extra special eye on the kiddies as the waves can get quite strong here at certain times
There’s something about the beach in winter that is different to in the summer. It’s not crowded and the only sounds are the ocean and maybe wind if it’s a harsher day. It can be a great place to relax and take a small stroll; it’s best to dress warm with scarves and jackets and just stick to the cliff line as the sea can get pretty gnarly at times! I like to put on either gumboots or high boots and take someone with me to have a nice catch up.
Back Beach is not as tame as other beaches in the area, but it’s still great for all members of the family with supervision of the little ones. One thing this beach is famous for in Taranaki is the great surf potential; this is where all the surfer guys and girls come to get the best waves. There are a few hidden spots that are great if you want some privacy when soaking up the sun and right next door is Paratutu Rock which is great to work up a sweat when going for a swim.
