Cable Bay Beach is located 20 km from Nelson in Cable Bay. Named after the first overseas cable link which was placed here in 1876, the picturesque shingle beach has a thin land connection running over to Pepin Island.
Popular with swimmers and sea kayakers, there is a small lagoon, a couple of surf spots and the 3 hour Cable Bay Walkway which has stunning coastal views. The rock pools and estuary can also be explored at low tide.
Facilities include a kids playground, picnic tables, toilets and a holiday park nearby.
Check out the Cable Bay Cafe which has been open since 1920.

This is my number one summer swimming beach -mainy because it’s only half an hour by car from town but feels a little bit remote and special. There’s a great camp ground there and also a cafe, so nice place to hang out for a day or two, but also perfect for a beach picnic or evening swim. It’s a lovely sheltered cove with safe swimming, no nasty currents and usually pretty quiet even in the height of summer
