Beautiful view and tables outside to soak up the summer sunshine!!

Cable Bay Restaurant is at the heart of Cable Bay Vineyards. A major hit with both Waiheke locals and landlubbers from the moment it opened its doors, it has some of the island's best views from its picture windows and a spacious alfresco courtyard from which to graze on tapas and sip a glass or two of the local produce. I also recommend taking the time to check out some of the venue’s amazing art and sculpture on display.

A short cab ride from the ferry and we found ourselves at the large doors leading into Cable Bay Vineyard.  They stood slightly foreboding as we approached and entered. Wow.. actually came out of my mouth because I was expecting one of your usual vineyard restaurants.  This was not what I had imagined behind these doors. An atrium leading off to tasting rooms, a shop and the large formal dining room.  The choice was easy.  With huge open fire and very warm comforting feel we knew this was the perfect place for us to be this day. The staff member approached and showed us to what I truly believe was the best table in the place.  A fabulous table near the large windows with spectacular view across the harbour to Auckland.  The only interruption to the view was of unique artwork pieces placed on the lingering front lawn. The kids quickly settled into their better behaviour faces and we all relaxed immediately.  Helping the relaxation process was a bottle of their syrah  and some ciabatta bread with a superb olive oil, butter and some olives to sample.  We then ordered the wagyu steak ( rare of course) for us and the kids chose pork belly (since fish or hotdogs was not an option) & chips. Fabulous food with matching service.  Our three waiters were finely tuned in their profession and made it an art.  Particularly Manny ( whom we have known from a previous restaurant) who kept us very happy throughout the experience. Loved the food, the ambiance, the superb wine and of course the service.   Not cheap at nearly $400 for our lunch but the good things in life are worth the extra. ( And we consumed 2 extremely good bottles of wine).. On a cold day.. what more could anyone want than a warm fire, superb wine and food all served with a view to linger with.

Great food, wine, location and wait staff; but the tired decor and long wait times for food let it down. Don’t be in a hurry.

Cable Bay vineyard is a short walk from Oneroa - the first bus stop from the ferry. The vineyards, wine bar and restaurant are housed in a stunning building on top of the hills. Friendly bar staff facilitate tastings which you can enjoy relaxed on the deck with stunning views back across the Hauraki gulf to the city. With any luck it will be raining in the city and sun shining on Waiheke, as often happens, so you can gloat as you sip the delicious wines on offer for sampling or wander barefoot on the lawn to inspect the vines. Stunning kinetic sculptures by Phil Price sit elegantly on the lawn to mesmerize you. Also on offer when we were there was free sampling of their lemon live oil which was absolutely divine - I highly recommend it. If you fancy a bit of a wine tasting afternoon walk head further down the road to Mudbrick Vineyards and restaurant, and Jurassic Ridge vineyard. No expensive wine tours required - just the money for your tastings which is around $10-15 for six of so wines at each place and your feet! Get our in the sunny summer sun and fresh air. Walking surely means you can taste more!

Cable Bay is simply an outstanding vineyard restaurant on Waiheke Island. It’s just before you get to Mudbrick, and it’s steely grey modern exterior is hard to miss. I’ve been here a few times and the food here is simply amazing. This is a place to really go out so save your money. For entree I dig their Herb Poach Salmon, followed by Pan Roasted Market Fish. Something about being on an island makes me want to eat endless seafood. There’s a ton of beautiful wine to match and I think I got a bit overzealous trying all their different wine last time I was there. The view is stunning too and there’s quite a few unique sculptures scattered all over their vineyard. On a beautiful day this place is one of the most amazing picturesque venues to dine at.

Cable Bay is the creme de la creme of dining, wine and views to Auckland. It could compete with the best in the world for this fablous contemporary setting over looking the haruraki golf. A palatial lawn contains a variety of kenetic sculptures which gently move with the breeze. For a day out in Auckland on a different scale you cannot beat a glass of the 2001 Pinot Gris and and a seat in their courtyard overlooking Auckland.

There are a lot of really beautiful places to eat on Waiheke. Several of them have stunning views. Many have exquisite fine-dining menus and wine lists. A handful have high-quality, knowledgeable staff. Cable Bay ticks the box marked 'all of the above'.  About a 3 minute cab ride up from the passenger ferry (but also offering parking for helicopters, if you're so inclined), Cable Bay makes the perfect destination-dining experience. Their menus change seasonally giving plenty of reason to return regularly throughout the year.  Make a point off booking around dusk to make the most of the beautiful views of the sun setting over the Auckland skyline.
