Much better location for these guys, now I don't need to worry for their lives crossing a busy road when bringing me my coffee unlike the old location. It is definitely a family friendly cafe so don't go expecting a quiet cup of coffee as there are always a tonne of kids flying around on the little bikes and scooters provided (they have a little circuit set up for them), but the views are amazing and its a great place to go in the summer.
At no other cafe in Wellington do you get to appreciate the city on a good day quite so much as you do at the Chocolate Frog Cafe – its bach style makes it feel like a mini-getaway. Grab a toasted sandwich or an iced coffee or some of the beautiful fish days, pull up a bean bag, and watch the yachts sail by.
You can't beat Wellington on a good day, so the saying goes - and on such a day (while we're at it with hackneyed expressions), it's as certain as taxes and death that the queue for Chocolate Fish Cafe will be out the door. Just a few minutes' drive from the airport, you really can't find a more picturesque spot. The spacious lawn - complete with plenty of bean bags to go round - means the cafe is perfect destination for families, but it's spacious enough so that those who don't consider themselves to be necessarily 'child-friendly' are sure to be able to find a spot of their own. The toasted sandwiches, iced coffee and milkshakes are to die for - and, in keeping with the 'traditional Kiwi bach' theme, so are the whitebait fritters...
Chocolate Fish Cafe isn’t the easy to access without a car, but it’s worth the trip for the view of Wellington harbour alone. The cafe itself is styled like a bach, with bean bags, blankets, and a great range of reading material, and the menu reads like a celebration of honest Kiwi fare: toasted sandwiches, seafood dishes, and ice blocks. For those who can’t pick between a caffeine hit and a refreshing ice cream, there’s affogato on offer, too – served with the cafe’s namesake, a chocolate fish, on the side.
Technically this spot isn’t in Miramar, but Shelly Bay is so close, and so wonderful on a sunny day. They do amazing fish, crayfish, paua and whietbait sandwiches here. Additionally, their outdoor courtyard and grassed area is super suitable for anyone with children. Your kids (or kids loaned from stressed friends needing a day off) will go wild over their collection of old bikes, carts and child sized vehicles.
