The Dance-O-Mat is a coin operated dance floor that anyone can use. A coin operated ex-laundromat washing machine powers four speakers which surround a custom made dance floor.
The Dance-O-Mat was first located on a vacant site in 2012 and has occupied three different gaps in the city since then. This project in its first iteration was extremely successful, getting 600 hours of use at our best guess (based on the $2 coins collected).
Pop a $2 coin into an old Laundromat washing machine, plug in your iPod or other portable music-playing device and dance along to your favourite beats. Be sure to check the blackboard booking system before hitting the d-floor – you never know, you might be overrun by a whole group of line dancers! Best of all, at this outdoor dance destination you can show off your best moves rain, hail or shine. Popular with dancers young and old, experienced and inexperienced, solo or part of a group, anything goes at the Dance-o-Mat, whether it is break dancing or rock ‘n’roll, the Gay Gordon or something a bit more interpretative. You’ll hear it before you see it.
