The Duke Carvell's Swan Lane Emporium is one of Wellington's hidden gems. Open for brunch, lunch and late into the evening for drinks and dinner.
A tapas style menu in the evening means your dishes are best suited to a communal
dining experience. Great, helpful staff work in a quirky and relaxed atmosphere with an outstanding courtyard open day and nights.
On Mondays the Duke offers a 2-4-1 deal. Buy any two dishes and get one of them for free (lowest priced item).

You want the best of New Zealand beef? You want to get to Duke Carvell’s for the Angus, grass-fed, 600g ribeye. Cooked medium rare, pickled walnuts, with watercress and bone broth. At $50, it’s on the pricier side of an evening out, which means it’s best saved for special occasions, but for a taste that will set a new standard in your food memory, it would be cheap at twice the price.
I've gone to Duke Carvell's a few times in recent months and it's one of those rare gems that delivers in the daytime as well as at night. It gets packed during the daytime for brunch, and no wonder – it offers a variation on the standard 'eggs and bacon' fare, including halloumi and offal offerings. And, when the sun goes down, its courtyard is perfect for a quiet drink with a friend. Plus, the service is unparalleled and I love the decor.
The food is just the best I had in NZ! That, and the great atmosphere and decor made me think of Belgium, where yummy filling food is served in a warm vibrant atmoshpere. Beside, the staff is fantastic and the moustache unforgettable. That's the only place in Welly where I went back for dinner actually. Nothing equals that top restaurant!
