Dunedin Railway Station is considered to be NZ's most photographed heritage building. Opened in 1906, the fabulous Flemish Renaissance-style design resulted in architect George Alexander Troup being awarded a knighthood.

Features include mosaic floors, stained glass windows with images of locomotives, Oamaru stone facings, magnificent gardens and the country's largest train platform.

Located in Anzac Square in the central city, the station is also home to the NZ Sports Hall of Fame and Otago Farmers' Market, while sightseeing tours on the Taieri Gorge Railway depart here daily.

The Dunedin Railway Station is a beautiful historic building in the centre of Dunedin. My favourite time to visit is on Saturday mornings when the Otago Farmers Market is on.

If you like historic architecture and like doing things for free, the Dunedin Railway Station is the perfect place to tick both boxes. The scale of this railway station is impressive and the intricate details will have your mouth dropping. Head along to the NZ Sports Hall of Fame museum upstairs or just wander around one of the country’s most photographed, and talked about, buildings.
