Depending on which time of the day you go Freeman & Grey can provide everything. By day this bar/eatery is the perfect place for a cheap lunch with $4 pizzas and a $10 lunch menu and by night a bustling bar ideal for after work drinks. Along the main road of Ponsonby this bar offers a deck for you to bask in the sun and a large indoor area so you'll have no problem fitting everyone in! A busy but relaxing place to be, Freeman & Grey is an the place for Ponsonby workers to grab a bite or knock off early and enjoy a pint.
$4 pizzas. ..or $0 pizzas - it doesn’t get much cheaper than that ! Whilst most cheap eats tend to feature Asian places - this one is different with gourmet pizzas for $4 during the week of you go before 7pm ! And if it’s Friday - and you’re a friend of the restaurant (free to join !) - there’s often $0 pizza shouts on Fridays !
So you’re on a bit of a budget which means work lunch consists of peanut butter and jelly sammies and two minute noodles? Well, there’s no need to put yourself through all that anymore - because Freeman and Grey’s $4 pizza menu is THE answer! You’d think their pizzas would be rather similar to those little microwave McCain ones for that price, but no no, they are absolutely delicious and full of top notch toppings. But, if pizza aint your thing then they have another cheap lunch menu with plenty of non-pizza options. Give it a go, I was absolutely pleasantly surprised - but be there between midday and 2pm!
A good friend was back from the UK and we wanted to catch up somewhere classy. A few of us separately requested we go to Freeman & Grey because we had all heard from different people about how nice it is. We ordered drinks and some of us got the ‘Farmer’s Platter’ to share. This had chicken wings, meatballs, calamari, wagyu beef sliders, stuffed mushrooms & beer battered fries. All were AMAZING although this conclusion may have been reached due to the numerous wines that had been consumed by the time the food came out (not implying that it took a long time but rather that we went all out on this particular occasion with the drinking).I have been back many times since and will continue to. The lovely outdoor area and the balcony upstairs that overlooks Ponsonby Road makes for the perfect place to have a casual wine after work and I think that is what this bar was created around the notion of; for that casual after work drink/bite to eat.
