French Cancan is a bakery run by the 2-starred Michelin Pastry Chef, Eric Hauser.

Needless to say, the products of this vastly over-qualified chef-patissier show a certain finesse, and each morning, following a 5.30am start, the cabinets of French Cancan steadily fill with brioche, gorgeous almond croissants, a range of pretty pastel macarons, multi-layered mille feuille and glistening fruit tartlets that look more like jewellery than food.

If your sweet-treat Achilles’ heel is of the flaky, pastry kind, French CanCan is the place to be. Widely renowned by those who know to be Wellington’s finest French bakery, it elevates the often-humble, sometimes-dry almond croissant to an indulgence par example. Their macarons, gooey lemon-meringue pies and pain au chocolat are tres deliceuse, aussi.

I used to be a regular at French Cancan when it and I were both based in Newtown – and when I moved to central Wellington it was one of the haunts I was most sad to leave behind. Mais alors! Cancan has a new, central location, but the pastries are the same, which is to say, excellent.
