Halfway down Dominion Road (and very easy to miss) lies Gingerbirds Kitchen and Catering. Ostensibly a catering business, with a large/bustling commercial business out the back, Gingerbirds also features a small cafe serving up an exquisite selection of cakes, sandwiches and soups. Stylish, minimalist decor and a few pieces of tastefully chosen contemporary art decorate the small 'dine in' area, with a couple of small tables and one larger one for communal eating. While the limited daytime opening hours (and they're not open Sundays either) prevent this from being a regular stop-off for most Aucklanders, Gingerbirds is the kind of place that, if you worked nearby, you'd be visiting on a regular basis. I really wish there was a place like near *my* work.
Popped in here for brunch, while doing some shopping in the area, the food was limited to counter food and pies, so it became an early lunch instead. There was a good variety of sandwiches, salads and cakes, with more being added to the counter as it came out of the kitchen. The service here was friendly and helpful, however we may not have needed to quiz the staff so much if the food was labeled. As this business is primarily a caterer/ meals to go place, there is limited seating, with a table for 4 and a long table for people to share, this means that this is a great place for a quick bite but not somewhere i could while away the afternoon. The music was nicely in the background, so it was noticeable but not intrusive, they had some fabulous paintings on the wall, a variety of cool lampshades and a great retro toilet sign The quality of the food we ordered was great, really tasty and a good combination of flavours, I had a yummy haloumi and beetroot sandwich my wife a bagel with salmon. The coffee was great but the cakes were even better. we Shared a Ginger Slice and a Lemon Cake, both were full of flavour, and the cake qwas cooked to perfection, definitely the highlight of the visit.
Gingerbirds is a catering company with a lovely selection of counter food to takeaway, or you can dine in if you wish. We popped in one Saturday while shopping in the area and the staff were welcoming, friendly and quick to serve us. Their baked goods were very moreish - the ginger crunch was a real favourite.
