As far as snorkelling close to Auckland goes, Goat Island is one of the best.  It's a marine reserve, so the fish are really friendly and it's possible to snorkel in the midst of schools of fish.  If you don't have your own, you can hire snorkelling gear once you get here.  There's also a cute glass bottom boat you can take a ride on.  Probably best during a summer weekday, as public holidays can get pretty busy.
