For Robi Smith and Wylie Dean, Lowbrow is not just an art movement but a lifestyle. Starting in 1970s California, Lowbrow has its origins in underground comics, punk music, hot-rod and tattoo subcultures. Robi and Wylie set out to capture this in their anti-restaurant, The Hard Luck Cafe on K'Road.

Hard Luck offers a have-it-your-own-way menu system served up in a lighthearted lounge room atmosphere, whether it be a 5-hour smoked short rib TV dinner, plate of buffalo wings or a smoked turkey breast salad. And for those who are anti-meat, there's lots of vegetarian and vegan options too.

It's a very good place for eat or just drink a coffee, very confortable.

Stumbled into this place on a rainy and windy day as I was trying to get out of the weather. Had a sit down and ordered my standard triple shot flat white. The coffee came very quickly and tasted amazing! I am a sucker for a good flat white and these guys delivered. I just wish it was closer to the Britomart area so I could come here more often, but if you work near K road pop in and give these guys a try.

I ate here in a group of four, and we found the food and service to be great. We shared a large vegetarian platter to start, which was full of interesting nibbles. The mains were all full of delicious flavours, we had tacos and sliders and shared them around. Simple food - but done so so well. The vibe was cool, but we weren't big fans of the pictures of naked women all over the bathrooms and counters - they are definately inappropriate, and really didn't add to the vibe for us.

This place has character. It’s funky relatively well priced and has such a cool vibe. The bean bags are epic.

Great deco, though since it has glass walls (and it's winter) it's cold inside when you're eating. I thought for the out doors area they would've had heaters but there aren't any. When I tried to place my order with one of the service staff I was told they take orders at the bar and "I'm not your waiter". The soft shell crab tacos are citrusy and delicious. Love the home made potato chips that come with it. The american slyder is just as yummy and the $20 steak meal with gravy and chips is good value for money. I'd come back again though not for the  service.

If you want good service, then hard luck. If you want a generous platter? Hard luck. If you want some good beers, you actually are in luck. The decor screams trying too hard and the staff are on the wrong side of surly.

Oh dear! Customer service makes or breaks your experience doesn't it? Hopefully they'll sort themselves out.

The vibe of the whole place is very cool, and a welcome change from the generic bar scene. The decor is eclectic and inspired, the food...well you just have to try it for yourself to know how good it is, not to mention the very creative way they serve it up.

Good to try new digs! Lets see how the night pans out….

just been in and loved the place!

Been meaning to come here for ages, but it had never seemed to have been open when I'd been in the CBD. Tonight, after a artery-hardening trip to Sal's Authentic New York Pizza, I really wanted something ice-creamy to take the edge off the oily mouth burn. Hard Luck Cafe to the rescue! Cue two large ice cream sundaes for the three of us - one of the better ice cream sundaes I've eaten - as well as the usual ice cream, there was some panna cotta, cheesecake mix, some lemon curd, crushed up brownie etc. We'll definitely be back for dinner ...
