I had a great lunch here the other day. I had heard that Il Buco had some amazing pizza, but I wanted to see for myself. The pizza there isn't like your standard pizza- it comes in square pizzas, without the crust- the base is all very thin, but still bready and delicious. Between two of us, we ordered four pieces from the cabinet-  salsiccia (italian sausage, tomato and cheese), patate e salsiccia (potato, italian sausage and rosemary), funghi e prosciutto (mushroom, ham, tomato and cheese), prosciutto cotto (tomato, mozzarella and ham). They were all delicious- my favourite being patate e salsiccia- I had NO IDEA that pizza without cheese could be super delicious. The rosemary and potato together were absolutely amazing, and I'm not sure what they put in their sausage, but it was delicious too. The pizza came out piping hot to us, hot out of the oven, on a big wooden board. Each piece sliced in half so we could share it. We also ordered some sides- one suppli (risotto balls, like arancini), and a stuffed mushroom each. The suppli were delicious- made from a tomato based risotto, they were perfect and I wish I'd ordered more. The stuffed mushrooms were great too- very garlicky! It's alfresco only dining, there are benches and stools on the footpath, which was a very funky way to have to my lunch. Lots of peoplewatching to be done!

Pizza without cheese?! Wth? I did not believe the guy when he said the onion pizza was delicious. How could it be without cheese? Thank you for the revelation. I am now a convert. It was almost the most devine pizza I've ever had, especially cos he added some spicy oil.

Really well made - never had a bad slice from here. Interesting flavours, lots of caramelised onions. And excellent coffee. I always stop past when I am in the area. Nice staff too, always playing good music on the stereo

The Coffee here is great. Supreme beans and the pizza is yum too especially the mushroom ones!!!!!!!!

Great bases lively spot heaps of good topping choices

The state of takeaway pizza in Auckland is rather abysmal. So, it's with great excitement that I heap praise on this tiny business for getting a few things perfectly right. First, their location in Ponsonby ensures that they get lots of foot traffic. They're near Ponsonby Fish & Chips (also excellent) and across from the much overlooked auction market that has the best selection of super cheap stuff ever. What you find when you walk into il Buco is a narrow walkway and a narrow glass counter, behind which sit beds of pizza slices, partially cooked so that you can either take home and bake to completion, or ask them to heat it up so you can eat it right there at one of their sidewalk tables. Johnny (I think he's the owner) is a very nice guy and is a whirlwind around the place as he manages coffee orders and pizza orders. There's a strong sense of organization and confidence in the place, the perfect example of a joint that focuses on only a very few things so that they do them all well. Let's talk about the pizza. It's superb. No thick, gummy crusts (yuk!), and the toppings are wildly varied and seem to be sourced from solid ingredients. My favorite is the basic sausage and cheese, but I've also had other meat toppings...all of them good. Don't be tempted to overdo it by ordering a huge selection of different slices. 2-4 slices are very filling for one person, even a hungry one.

I love the pizzas here and LOVE the fact you can bring them home to cook.  So much better than a takeaway mass produced one.  ( They do cook them onsite for you to eat there also)  Whenever passing I stop in a grab three or four and put them in the freezer to pull out and bake fresh as if just made.  A friend got me onto this idea.. Bless her!!! Fab scrummy pizza to go....

l buco is a traditional Roman Pizza al Taglio which give you flexibility to choose what ever slices you want. They use only the best ingredients available to prepare the 30 different varieties of pizza on the menu. The generously topped pizza is partially cooked and displayed for you to select your slices. You can choose for them to finish cooking them in their oven which only takes 5 minutes, or you can take them home and finish them in your own oven. Yummy Pizza which ever way you decide They take the entertainment voucher, which is an added bonus.

Nom! I really like the convenience of Il Buco as they allow you to buy pizza by the slice. Their pizzas are also in a unique rectangle/squarish kind of shape, which is really memorable. Toppings-wise they put in a lot of effort to make it taste a little different from your standard pizza takeaways. Ponsonbynites swear by this place and I can see why.

Il Buco is interesting in that the pizza is on display for you to buy by the slice but you have the option of having them fire it up and finish it for you to eat then and there or you can take a few home to heat up in your own oven. For my money I'd much rather they did it onsite :-) The pizzas are fresh and delicious and made much more 'authentically' than you'll find elsewhere. There's a wide range of vegetarian options available which will please both vegetarians and the more omnivorous alike. Highly recommended.
