Karekare Beach is an unspoiled beach located 38 km west of Auckland in the small coastal village of Karekare. The picturesque black sand beach is surrounded by the Waitakere Ranges and is great for surfing, bodyboarding on the sand dunes or swimming during patrolled hours.

Popular with Aucklanders looking to escape the city, it is still a lot quieter than its northerly neighbour Piha.

Crowded House's album 'Together Alone' was recorded here with one of the songs named in its honour, while scenes from Oscar winning movie The Piano and Xena: Warrior Princess were also shot here.

this beach is a must see for all international tourists coming to auckland, it is very similar to piha but less traffic, the sights are beautiful and you can get right up close to the cliffs to see how our beautiful world was produced. a must see, the black sand is fun too =)

Well said! Best at low tide, then you can walk around to the next bay too. LOVE the west coast.

i love this beach, people rave about piha but karekare is just as beautiful but you have less people around, its much more secluded and that might be because of the rugged drive to get here but is it worth it! a must for anyone wanting to see a true west coast beach.
