A great get-a-way down the coast with a standard family-friendly DoC campsite on site adjacent to a beautiful sandy ocean beach with excellent fishing and swimming. It’s adjacent to the Matata wildlife refuge with birds galore.

    A short turnoff from the main road will find you arriving in Matata campsite, a lovely classic New Zealand DOC campsite (one with hot showers) nestled behind a large bank of sand dunes. The beach is long and white, and you’re likely to have it almost to yourself. A handy stop on the way to Rotorua from Tauranga.
