Home of the busy ferry terminal, Maitatia bay first greets visitors as they arrive on Waiheke Island. The picturesque bay features a harbour and a couple of sandy stretches along the coastline. Plans to construct a 160 berth marina have met with some opposition from local residents.

The Matiatia Headland Walk begins and ends at the ferry terminal, taking you over Matiatia Headland past secluded beaches, cliff-top vistas, some of the islands finest mansions and a historic post 1600's Pa site. It also houses the popular contemporary outdoor exhibition 'Headland Sculpture on the Gulf' .

Never been there

I went over with my family and had a great time, everyone we talked to was friendly and we had a wonderful walk around the sculptures, I think my favorite must have been the swings :) definitely one of my must dos!!!

The New York Times has touted New Zealand’s Waiheke Island and it’s iconic Sculpture on the Gulf exhibition as one of the ‘must do’s for 2013 (seen here as no.35). 30 large-scale new sculptures have been unveiled along the Matiatia Bay headland, with the stunning Hauraki Gulf as its backdrop. Works have been created by some of New Zealand’s top established and emerging artists. The event is open daily from 8.30am from 25 January to 17 February 2013. It is free to walk the track, but donations are encouraged - Headland Sculpture on the Gulf relies completely on sponsorship, grants and donations.

Welcoming & Farewelling near & dear.

Waiheke’s waiting for ya.
