The Mavora Lakes are considered to be one of the treasures of Southland and part of Te Wāhipounamu/South-West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Located in the south-west corner of New Zealand's South Island, the landscape is dominated by mountains, lakes, forests and grasslands. The two lakes, North Mavora and South Mavora can be found between Mossburn and Te Anau on State Highway 94.
Mavora is a very special areas as many activities not allowed in other National Parks are permitted here, such as hunting, trout fishing, boating, water sports, 4WD-driving horse trekking, hiking (tramping) and mountain biking. A word of warning before you go: Take an industrial strength insect repellant with you as the sandflies are ferocious and not willing to give ground to you.
If you identify with tramping rugged landscapes, mountain biking through steep tree blocks, and patiently fishing for some of the largest trout imaginable, then Mavora Lakes are for you! Now that the weather is warming and your feet are insistently tapping away counting down to the weekend, you might want to consider a weekend getaway to Mavora Lakes Park. They offer both indoor and outdoor accommodation types, as well as a reliable power source so you don’t have to miss a warm shower! With an absurd number of opportunities waiting outside your doorstep, why wouldn’t you take a drive to Mavora this weekend?
Surrounded by an abundance of mountainous landscapes and crystal clear waters, Mavora Lakes Park is a real treat for dog owners and their faithful companions. One of the few parks around Te Anau that allows dogs – Mavora Lakes is a pristine location for a short holiday with your best pal. Remember to pay respect to the gorgeous location by keeping the tracks and water clean for the next guests.
