Finally some great Mexican food in Auckland! After we were seated my first thought was that I hoped the food matched the amazing decor - which luckily it does. Firstly, the place is gorgeous - cozy and inviting on a rainy Monday night with dim lighting and candles on every table; the walls are covered with colourful Mexican artwork and little neon alters - busy but beautiful - not a hint of minimalism! Food - Fantastic! Super yummy fresh flavours - not overly complicated at all. Not as spicy as you would get in Mexico (which is fine by me plus they have a selection of hot sauces on each table). We shared a few items between two of us - charred squid and chorizo, prawn salad, beef taco, fish taco, chicken quesadilla and chips with salsa - it was all delicious and more than enough. Make sure you check out the specials as well though, we had food envy on our way out when we saw the board. Looking forward to the next time we go back - would be a fun place to go with a small group as they serve pitchers of sangria and margaritas which I would love to try. Overall, YUM!
Had heard good things about Mexico and it delivered. It was humming on the Thursday night we went. Had to wait for an hour and a half for a table around the corner at the little bar. The whole place has a fantastic atmosphere - wait staff wear Frido Carlo-esque flower headbands, the exposed brick walls are covered with images, the kitchen is part of the restaurant, bare wood tables and bench seats, the menus are A3 paper which double up as place mats, the lighting is dim, and the bathrooms are completely covered in images.
Now this place is a definite stop for Mexican lovers!! Although the food itself is not the best; price, atmosphere, staff n menu really make up for it! prices are very friendly $6+ n servings are tapa style. We ordered the chicken quiesdilla n the guacamole that came with it was worth the price itself, it was very generous! it’s very busy n we were lucky we only had to wait 10min on a sat night at 6pm for a table!! if you’re in town stop by, a really cool place to start a girls night too!
The fit-out in the new Mexico is gorgeous! Fun and vibrant, it is everything I would ask from a Mexican restaurant's interior. Things are a little on the busy and cramped side at the moment, but it served only to add to the atmosphere I thought. The food was stunning, and well priced. The frozen magaritas, however, left a lot to be desired and were expensive at $55 (minimum) a (small) jug.
Loved the kitsch decor, it was spotlessly clean and what food I had was delicious and reasonably priced. Soft shell tacoes are $6 each. The spicy fried chicken tenders were so very good. I will definitely be back, though I am sorely disappointed with how expensive some of the drinks are - $18 for a watermelon margarita is outrageous.
