The park is known for its 364-hectares magnificent rain forest as well as the hot relaxing springs, where many litres of hot ancient sea water pours though. My favourite is the small pools at the end of the Nikau Walk. Pure bliss.

If you’re travelling between Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay stop at Morere Hot Springs. An ancient world of rainforest and nikau palms invite you to explore a magical and mystical 364 hectares of rainforest. To me the best thing of all is at the end of the three-hour walk is being able to sit in a tub of ancient sea water next to a bubbling stream. Absolute serenity.

Imagine immersed in ancient hot water in the middle of a rain forest next to a forest stream. All this absolute bliss for $12 adults and $6 for kids. And if you want to swim head to the lower and much larger pool.

With 250,000 litres a day of hot ancient sea water passing through the springs this place is well-worth a stop between Gisborne and Napier. You are spoilt for choice with six hot or cold pools, set in 364 hectares of ancient rain forest. My favourite are a short 10-minute walk through a nikau-fringed forest, overlooking the Mangatawa Stream - hot, steamy and truly healing.

After driving for 6 hours all I wanted to do was get out of the car and relax. Fortunately we had booked into Morere for the night and within 15 mins of arriving we were soaking away our troubles in the private pools. I quickly lost count of how many hours we spent getting treated but it's fair to say my skin was a little pruney by the end! It wasn't all about relaxing either as my restlessness soon got me exploring the Mangaweka Track as well. It's a beautiful pathway winding through the native bush. And guess what, I got to rest my tired feet again in the hot springs afterwards. Bliss.
