If you go to an Auckland friend's parent's house there is bound to be some Morris and James pottery inside and/or outdoors. The large, long pots and the large platters are my favorites. And I am pretty sure that they can make items from discontinued lines if you have your heart set on something, and ask nicely. There is a huge seconds section at the back of the shop too where you can pick up great bargains at any time of the year. I purchased a platter for my mum for Christmas from the seconds section for a lot less than the pristine version - it had a small fingermark/dent in the side, which was barely noticeable and, to me, added to its handmade charm!

One of the best gifts I have ever been given was a Tile of Auckland Harbour Bridge (Morris & James of Matakana) which hung in my kitchen as a focal talking point.  It really captured the eye of many a visitor.  My best friend & bridemaid gave me this as a house warming gift when I purchased my first home.    Sadly  it had an accident when moving to my next home.

This place has such fond childhood memories for me. Living in Algies Bay we would visit quite a lot. They have some of the highest quality and most distinctive pottery range in the country. There is an educational video documentary running which shows the history and process which is a great touch. I particularly love the mountain of discards for picking through. Not sure if that is still there though. They also have other gifts and a cafe.

Its Queens Birthday weekend so its time to head up to Matakana to check out the pottery at Morris and James. They have specials on so plan to bag a bargain.  I hope they have the Aztec Platter on sale.  It's a stunning piece of pottery in vibrant red and terracotta tones.  Perfect for serving barbeque nibbles from.   While we are there, lunch at the Pottery Cafe is a  must. The food is always fresh and tasty, taking advantage of all the local produce, washed down with  glass of local wine perfect!
