On the north-eastern side of the Coromandel peninsula lies one of the least developed and most spectacular beaches in NZ. New Chums Beach can be accessed from the northern end of Whangapoua beach where you must cross a lagoon to begin the 30 to 40 minute walking track over the headland and along rocky shoreline.
The walk is well worth the effort to reach the tranquil white sandy beach surrounded by Pohutukawa and native bush.
With an abundance of marine life, it's a great place to enjoy a spot of fishing, surf the swells or take a leisurely stroll.

This rarely explored gem has been voted as one of the world’s top 10 beaches! Wading through the estuary at the northern end of Whangapoa beach you’ll find a track that crosses the low point in the headland saddle over to the scenic New Chum Beach. It takes about 30 minutes one way. New Chums golden sand is fringed by Pohutukawa and native forest and is deserted for most of the year (but quite busy in summer). There are no buildings, no roads, no infrastructure or camping - it is a true jewel in New Zealand’s coastal crown.
