Remarkably there are almost no trees along this wild, barren stretch of coastline because of the intense, prolonged winds that funnel into the headlands at Ngawi. It makes for a dynamic, exciting place to visit.

The kids will love the fact that this beach has the most bulldozers in New Zealand because the machines are used to haul fishing boats out of the rough waters, due to the fact there is no wharf. It's a cool place to fish and watch the large packs of sea lions and fur seals that roam free. Just don't get too close!

Join the commercial fishermen at the fishing village of Ngawi on a nice day and take a boat to take advantage of the large variety of fish which are known to frequent the area. Blue cod, tarakihi and groper are commonly caught. There’s also other seafood like crayfish, kina and paua available. If you’re feeling competitive, don’t forget to enter the annual fishing competition.

For a fun road trip, head to the small fishing village of Ngawi - it has more tractors and bulldozers per capita than anywhere else in NZ and several of them are parked up on the beach for kids to have a look. It’s an amazing scenic drive, cruising through rolling hills to descend into a magnificent view of Palliser Bay. Don’t forget to stop on the way to see the seal colony and the spectacular Putangirua Pinnacles.
