Went here for lunch on Sunday. We arrived pretty early (12pm) but it was all systems go, even though they'd just opened. The staff are super friendly and really attentive. Loved the decor - think 1981, funnily enough. No detail is spared in this place's retrofication. As an 80s child (ish), it definitely took me back. And I'll go back again.

This bar is so much fun! The decor is all out of the 1980's with brightly coloured tables, old school music, old weetbix tins and other memorabilia. It has the potential to sound like a dated idea with lots of tacky items but these guys have decorated in a tasteful way. There are lots of comfy couches, seats in the sitting room including a ping pong table. It has a friendly family feel, with good value meals, fun atmosphere and good kiwi service. There is an outdoor area which is a nice change and although located near the motorway you can easily forget where you are. There was a mix of clientele from business people, to those on a date and friends hanging out. Worth a visit!

This is a god 'night time' bar - in other words, the darkness will hide it's imperfections. A great idea, with retro furniture and fittings, this really has the makings of a good place - but it's definitly a bar and not somewhere to stop for Sunday lunch. From the outside it's very enticing but once you go in it has the tell-tale smell of a pub that's had a big night.

Lazy easter sunday eats were easy-as at this funky fresh start-up in Manukau. Proprietor Fanta Meharg is an easy-going hospitality geek with plenty of humour and great recommendations on the menu - his bar-back at the time was sporting a very-appropriate sweatband, and could easily converse with us about the spirits, cocktails and beers on offer. The cocktail list is fresh and fruity, summer flavours that border on a freshly-made un-bottled RTD (which are also sold here) but don't let that hold you back from the Rubiks cube bar: this is the home of the Hubba Bubba Bomb, a shooter that looks and smells like a bubble gum ring and... tastes like red bull and vodka (ok, there is some bubble-goodness in there, too). It's a definite must-try for any first-time visitor. We shared some Bruschetta ("brus-KETTA") with plenty of flavor and accompanying salad - and a Higgins and Miami Wine Cooler cocktail each to start. The market fish (yellowfin tuna steak with prawn mash, lemon emulsion) almost swayed my decision from the Vegetarian Lasagna, but I'm glad Fanta put me back on track - my 'Manukau sized' portion of fresh vegetarian lasagna was incredibly flavorful, but eventually beat me within the last few mouthfuls: maybe I could have finished it without that delicious starter? My man enjoyed an incredible Lamb and Cous Cous salad, far more substantial than it originally seemed on the clipboard-menu. Ten minutes of rest meant we were both ready to attempt dessert: his, a piece "Howzat!" berry cheesecake and mine, a spiced-rum Tiramisu. The tiramisu was the perfect balance between dry and rich, served with a refreshing berry coulis - my inability to finish it was rivaled only by my woe that it would go to waste. Nineteen Eighty One stays true to its theme in the most colorful, neon-radical way it possibly can (from the Princess Diana & Prince Charles wedding photos, to the hexagon wallpaper  and formica tabletops) and its plastic fantastic facade is easily backed up by an inventive, affordable menu with fresh meals all prepared on-site; awesome service packed with loads of personality and flair. I'll definitely be back as soon as I can, to try a milk-bottle tap-beer and a 1981 buffalo burger ($19.81 exactly). Bring back the Golden oldies, and stay classy, South Auckland.

The name says it all... Themed out in 1981 decor ~ without giving away my age, let's just say everything from the wallpaper to the ornaments are very familiar

Bar filled with 1980's memorabilia that you can actually interact with and reminisce.  Items ranged from Girl Guide books, to Charles & Diana commemorative plates, to old computer games and food utensils. Limited wine list but all the usual suspects on tap.
