Amazing food, love the atmosphere and highly recommend to everyone!

It was our third attempt at going to Nishiki last night and we finally got a table. It was drizzling outside but the I felt like a steamed bun in the Japanese joint. The menu is massive, it’s b.y.o and the Japanese tapa style dishes are ideal for sharing. We got some skewers, their chicken teriyaki and the tako cha. All were pretty dam good. What’s not to like?

Now open in Botany and the CBD, Nishiki is a great place for big, hungry groups and has a vast menu to cater to all tastes when it comes to Japanese (and occasionally, Korean) cuisine. Its central location and reputation for great service are an added bonus.

Awesome food, great atmosphere, accessible prices.

Menu is pretty broad so some of the dishes are worth missing. But they do good takoyaki, agedashi tofu, beef tataki etc... Would definitely recommend this place for any occasion (dinner with the parents, first date, business meeting, friends). It's great.

Don’t mind dining here daily!

Excellent food, very good prices, & the biggest jugs of beer!!

Nishiki (Freeman's bay) is my absolute no fail, favourite affordable, byo japanese restaurant in Auckland. Have been here with one other person, a small group, and a large gathering. Delicious, light, quality japanese so good you MUST book in advance because it is POPULAR. Although the only down-side is that it 's well-known as a byo-before-town dinner venue for 20-somethings so it has the tendency to be pretty loud on a Friday or Saturday night. On one occasion when i was at a table for two we could hardly hear each other over the din. However, asking for a table outside (outdoor heating and covering makes it perfect outside all year round) remedies this. If you enjoy food such as beef tataki or salmon, agedashi tofu, softshell crab, tempura mayo prawns and sushi-to-die-for you will enjoy Nishiki. Food is designed to be shared by the table rather than ordering your own dishes. I have hardly ever paid over $30 a head unless we totally indulge and order too many dishes.  Like the one time we paid about $40 each and were shocked -only because Nishiki is so affordable (when you byo wine) your bill never grows too large.

A little way off the main strip in Ponsonby, first appearances are not what they appear!! A vibrant, loud and energetic environment with the popular Ponsonby crowd - its really big what you’d expect. The menu has pictures… Which turned out to be a good thing given the huge variety of dishes. The food was fresh, hot and tasty. Be prepared that your food will come out at different times, so share as a table, or order a few dishes yourself. Plenty of room for large groups, but make sure you book in advance (6pm or 8pm seatings). Tip: the food is great, but they’re not masters of dessert, I’d give it a miss. See the photo for a mung bean, cornflake and tinned fruit salad sundae :)
