Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms on the Otago coast. Located at the northern end of the Catlins coast down the road from Kaka Point, this steep headland has a lighthouse at its tip, surrounded by rocky islets (The Nuggets). The point is home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. Roaring Bay, on the south coast of the tip of Nugget Point, is home to a small colony of yellow-eyed penguins.

Rare Pokemon characters are well-known for loving lighthouses. No wonder then that Pikachu has been spotted hanging out at one of New Zealand's most famous - Nugget Point.

When driving along the coast there is always one place we always stop .. Nugget Point! It’s an iconic part of the region and is a great place for walking and hiking.

For beautiful scenery that will take your breath away, head to Nuggest Point during these cold months. You’ll be astounded by the coastline and bird life, as well as fur seals (if you’re lucky to see them!).

An iconic spot on the Otago coastline. Pick your picnic spot and watch the wildlife which includes sea birds and yellow-eyed penguins. You may get lucky and see sea lions and elephant seals!

The Catlins Coast may be less travelled, but that just makes places like Nugget Point all the more special. Along a small peninsular, there are opportunities to see seals as you walk out to a picturesque lighthouse at its point.
