When owners Josh Helm and Tom Hishon first met in London, they threw an Orphans' Christmas dinner every year so that they could get together with their other expat friends during this lonely holiday. These dinners were such a hit that they talked about opening a restaurant, and so Orphans Kitchen was born.
Located in Ponsonby, Orphans Kitchen is a no-bookings, casual kind of eatery that serves up an ever-changing menu of seasonal and interesting dishes. Pull up a sheepskin-covered stool and settle in for a night of great food and wine with friends.

It’s one of the hottest restaurants in Ponsonby but what I love most about Orphans Kitchen is their gourmet take on the traditional boil up. Of course, with broth being all the rage, boil up is actually some of the most nutrient-rich food you can get into your body. So whenever my immunity is feeling low, this is the place I come and the dish I choose.
Great atmosphere. The 3 piece band (drums, bass & guitar) that plays on a Friday sets the scene for a perfect week wind down with friends, family or significant other over some of the yummiest food in ponsonby. The food is worth paying a little extra for and all meat is free range and fish sustainably line-caught.
OK is fantastic in the sense that it's unpretentious dining, yet über cool. The parred back rustic decor is complimented with the most beautiful vintage glasses and there's even a stick of purifying charcoal in the water jugs. Nice touch. Food used is of high quality and if you get the Wagyu ask for the full run down and your lovely waiter will pretend to be a cow! Don't leave without trying one of their famous crumpets with burnt butter + roof honey (they have hives onsite). Excellent coffee served in Arcroc cups for a little bit of nostalgia. Taste: 5/5 Value: 4/5 (quite pricy) Service: 5/5 Must try: mocha (made w dark choc) and the crumpet. Yum. Instagram: @oliviaroundtown
A new local on the P-Rd strip, this place is super cool, relatively inexpensive, with interesting flavour combos and new dishes, and hot young Chef’s with a passion for food and doing it differently. Can’t wait to go back. LOVED the smoked butter and fresh made bread, rich choc mousse with Tamarillo.
Orphans is great for lacto-vegetarians - ie those who eat dairy and eggs or pescatarians. The gnocchi with hen’s egg is soft and gooey, the brussell sprout cups with goats curd is a standout and very delicate and they do an excellent cheese platter. The fish is always simply prepared but very tasty and Tina’s wedge is a must have - a crisp wedge of iceberg lettuce with a herby, tangy dressing.
