parking and sleeping near a gas station new zealand , bush fire in australia
I was asked this question and my answer was it might not be safe , lonely planet has another opinion .
While camped out in central Victoria in the bush country .I woke about 3 am saw lightning in the clouds that were moving quickly towards the North moving cold air .The warm air was predicted to come south the next day .
Went for a walk into town walked past the police station the police were watching the telly .Did not sleep that night moved the camper into the town area thought that it would be safer . A cold but confusing night , had heard there was going to be a fire alert , possibility . Had breakfast at the bakery , a coffee , walked around for an hour or to and did not like the vibe .Life was normal . The farmers were feeding their cattle , the lady in the antique shop cleaned her china
I went to the police station they were too busy .Talked to the volunteer fire brigade in the pub they were watching a cricket game in Napier New Zealand .
But I was leaving town . I offered people a lift into Melbourne in my campervan .I offered to take children to their grand parents in Melbourne .No way no one wanted to know .
The campervan tourist arrived in Melbourne as black as night covered in bush fire blackened dust . By 3pm or so I was in St Kida beach .By then half the town was dead back there in the country side .2009 thats right 2009 .The town I had been in was burnt to a cinder .
Went to the pub was told I was too dirty to have a drink too blackened went to the park and slept under a tree , with my back to the wind with a group of aboriginals . The van was towed away and I woke up the next day , or lets say 20 or 25 hours later . the towns I had been in had been wiped out . I still have not recovered .
Heard a rock star a famous one talk about the day he was involved in the same bush fire in 2009 .Said the same things that I think .I do not feel so alone in these thoughts now . So be careful out there, careful of bush fires ,careful of flooding rivers and creeks . Also be careful of sleeping near petrol stations .2009 bush fire was unbelieveable
So the moral of the story is do not take risks parking near petrol stations and learn from your gut feeling regards saftey .
The snakes and wild life are not a problem . The people in the town , the policeman in the town did not listen to warnings .I did .
