Penguino’s is handily situated in an arcade off Trafalgar St and is good enough to have a mention in Lonely Planet. The gelato is all made on the premises, and there’s a great range of regular and "special" flavours. Customers can suggest a flavour and if it is successful they get… free ice creams! Gelato is lower in fat than traditional ice cream so it’s almost healthy, and they also have dairy free sorbet available.
For sheer flavour, and range, Penguino’s offers the best value in my book - high quality gelato, all the standard flavours plus a few new ones every time I go in. The ice creams are smaller than the huge scoops you get elsewhere but as it is all made on the premises I think in terms of quality and taste these are by far the best ice creams in Nelson.
Okay so there are no Easter Bunnies in sight but Penguins are related to chickens, somehow, and chicken have eggs, yes. That leads me to Penguino’s (as if I needed an excuse) for a delicious home made gelato ice cream. Exotic flavours abound – chilli chocolate, cardamom ice cream, there’s something different every day.
