Puke Ariki was the very first purpose-built, fully integrated museum, library and visitor information centre to be built in the world.

It is home to thousands of books, heritage collections and learning resources and was opened after much work in 2003.

A dramatic and enticing building, Puke Ariki has won many awards for design, delivery, innovation and architecture. It is a great place to take friends, family, visitors and just yourself.

Whether you’re after a quiet study nook or a vibrant school holiday programme, make sure you check out Puke Ariki!

As a student myself, I know exactly how handy the library can be when you need a bit of peace and quiet away from the distractions at home. Puke Ariki has a multitude of study desks, helpful books; and reading nooks, some of which are in the sun!

Great museum. I'm looking forward to the Tony Carter Photography exhibition starting in September! Will be paying a special trip to New Plymouth to check it out #shoutme

I love the New Plymouth Library because it’s a great place to rug up on a rainy day and enjoy a great book. Home to many heritage collections, it’s also a great chance to get a sense of history of the Taranaki area. Love it!

There’s a school holiday programme on every single day at Puke Ariki. These programs were designed to stimulate the children’s minds, but also to have fun at the same time. Why not let your child go on the Ruru Scavenger Hunt where the mission is to find certain objects around the museum, there’s even a hunt for the under-5s. Or on Saturdays and Sundays take a tour of the Richmond Cottage that starts at 11am and finishes at 3.30pm, it has lots of information about the settler family life, and the best part is it’s free!

Puke Ariki is the official museum of New Plymouth. Its connected to the public library which you can get to by walking on an indoor bridge over a road in between them. It has a cafe where you can go in and enjoy an amazing coffee, and is great for all ages or even just yourself if your wanting a quiet day. The library is over 3 stories high and has a section down on the ground level for the kids to hang out in, I know I was there quite frequently when I was young!
