A 45 minute ferry ride from Auckland, Rakino is a great place to spend the day, or to stay for a few days. With holiday homes for rent, and enough scenic walks, swimming spots and excellent fishing to occupy the adventurer in you for days on end.

Fishing in the area is also top notch, whether it be from a boat or from the beach, and the snapper schools in the area are the perfect catch.

There is no electricity on the island, apart from solar power, so it's like stepping back in time and the ferry travels to and from the island every friday and sunday, making for a perfect chance to have a weekend adventure in the Hauraki Gulf.

Rakino Island is a top spot for a long weekend away from Auckland. I love the fact that you only need to jump on a ferry in downtown Auckland and within 45 minutes you are chilling at your weekend island destination. There's lots of baches you can book online. A great place to go with family or your mates to totally relax.

Early summer in Auckland means snapper season and in December and January there are usually schools of snapper that travel down past Rakino Island, making it one of the best fishing spots to snag this precious white-fleshed fish. If you are land-based then the fishing is best off Rakino Wharf and if you have a boat you can head out to the hole, which sits just off the wharf. One of the most remote islands in the Hauraki Gulf, yet just over a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland, this is one place that both locals and visitors alike should have on their summer to-do list.
