Four Square is one of NZ's most recognisable brands and first came about in 1922 when Foodstuff's founder John Heaton Barker set about forming a co-operative of independent grocers. With the iconic Four Square Man symbol appearing in the 1950s, they have now expanded to include over 280 nationwide branches.

Originally built to sell provisions for the crew of visiting ships with goods delivered by barge, the Rawene store became a Four Square in 1988 and is currently run by friendly owner Michael Blair. You can find groceries, meat, fresh produce, beer, wine and sweet treats instore.

Like Russell the Four Square in Rawene is the biggest grocery store for a minimum 30 minute drive away. They have a good range of everything so if you’re on holiday and forget to shop beforehand you won’t be left high and dry. I love it because I always buy some chocolate milk for the ferry ride.

There's nothing like a trip to a well-stocked dairy. This is our go-to for groceries when we're in Rawene. The owners are so hospitable they always make me want to come back for a chat. They're also a great source of local knowledge and regularly point me in the right direction for the best swim, or most private beach. Their high presentation standards are great, all the produce appears fresh and they have an enormous range of sweets... just what you want on holiday! While you're in town make a point to go into the Rawene Four Square for a few tasty treats to nibble by the wharf.
