Opened in 2013, the 34km Roxburgh Gorge Trail is a popular cycle trail between Alexandra and the Roxburgh Dam. Taking you through the spectacular gorge, riders can view various historic sites including schist huts built into the rock by Chinese miners and the remains of two small mining villages.

A great place to spot native wildlife including the Karearea falcon, the track is stunning all year round, with purple wild thyme covered hillsides in summer and golden willow trees in autumn.

The middle section is currently closed but riders can access the end of the track by boat.

An intermediate bike track, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is a goodie. It will take you four to six hours to complete and you’ll see the beautiful sights of Otago including stunning rock formations and historic stone cottages.

Connecting Alexandra to the Roxburgh Dam, Roxburgh Gorge Trail I’ve only tried once but was mightily fun. This cycling and walking track is super. If you want to experience the full trail, you’ll need to fork out a little cash. Check out their website for more info and rates.
