We are frequent visitors to kelly Tarltons, We love the penguin ride and the giant turtle and shark. There is always so much to see and do for the children, whether it is the open tanks for the children to touch the starfish, viewing the penguins or watching the stingrays be feed there is always a lot happening here. There is lots of fun and the children are free to run around with no worry of them getting hurt or lost. A great daily adventure.
We were lucky enough to get a family pass to Kelly Tarltons from being in the Localist Top 100 so went last weekend on a rainy day. It seemed like a good portion of Aucklanders had the same idea and it took a bit to park and get to the front of the queue to get our tickets! There is currently a construciton project going on to make a new place for the penguins which should be finished by November so paying customers were given free tickets to return once the construction was complete. You could still see the penguins and we watched them being fed up close through the glass which was great! My 2 year old thought that was fantastic. He also enjoyed going on the "conveyor belt" and seeing the fish, turtles and sharks in the tunnel and playing in the discovery centre. I loved the new sea horse and sea dragon exhibit - there are some amazing pink baby spiny sea dragons - the only baby ones in captivity. It will be interesting to see what changes are made after the construction has been finished. If you live close by, it would be worth getting a yearly pass.
We had tickets as part of a combined deal which allowed us to to visit several Auckland venues of which Kelly Tarlton's was enjoyed immensely by the kids. Good displays, interactive at times, and a quality environment for the underwater residents and penguins alike ! Some parts look a bit tired but I understand they are refurbishing some parts.
Kelly Tarlton is quite small and a little dated compared to other aquariums of the world. They do charge a really heafty entrance so visitors expect to experience a world class aquarium with a few more exibits. The Antarctic Encounter takes you taken back in time with a replica hut of explorer Captain Robert Scott. The historical exhibits are quite informative if you have any interest in Antarctic exploration The kids love the Antarctic snowcat, where you're transported to a world of penguins and ice. You get to watch the little penguins upclose as they dive into the icy cold waters (as they would in their natural habitat) The place was well-maintained and clean and the staff are quite friendly and helpful. The walk through the tunnel is great way to see several different species of fish swimming directly above and around you. If you make it around feeding time its even better. You can even pay to go snorkeling in a cage inside the aquarium with the sting ray and shark. The staff were both friendly and quite knowledgeable. Its an amazing place to take the kids but if you'd like to visit often, an off peak seasonal pass is definately recommended.
So suprisingly enough, a few months back i won tickets from the localist to kelly tarltons :) and arnt i glad i went. The place is so educational and fun, even for a teen ahah. There was a guy feeding the stigrays in as i was there and theres a cute little polar car you can go in and see all the penguins and it feels like antartica, well it did for me,
