Sri Pinang, on Auckland's K'Road, has been standing proud on that spot for more than two decades - not a small feat in Auckland's ever-changing restaurant scene.

The secret to their success lies in the unbeatable combination of delicious Malaysian specialities (their chicken with plum sauce and the beef rendang are a must-try), fantastic prices, warm and welcoming service, and BYO at $1 per person. It's no wonder that this place is bustling with diners every day of the week! Booking is highly recommended, especially for weekend evenings.

I went to Sri Pinang with friends on their recommendation for a cheap eat and wow, was I impressed. We were totally spoilt by Angie, the owner, who chatted to us on and off all evening giving us tips here and there about the menu. The veggie noodles were so fresh and the money bags delicious. The portions were so big, I didn't even get half way through my seafood broth so took it home to enjoy instead. AND, for all the yumminess of our dinner, the bill was minuscule. A great evening out for a group of friends and it's BYO.

Sri Penang is amazingly cheap, its BYO so is great to take a group along. One hint - if you're new here, you need to know that BOOKINGS must be made (I think they do a 6.30 and 8.30 seating. Angie the owner is lovely and she will remember you if you become regular. Unlike my friends, I hate curries - but there are tons of options for me - their Lemon Fish is amazing!

The roti curry is legendary. The beef rendang is a favourite. The food is consistently amazing and cheap! Be it lunch or dinner, BYO (usually the liquor outlet across the road), can't beat the value. You will probably leave with a doggy bag and be so full you can hardly walk, but everything tastes so good it's hard to stop eating.

I'm a huge fan of Malaysian Foods and Sri Panang is one of the best in the city for people in the know. They have all your classic dishes like Nasi Goren and Nasi Lemak. But their fried rice is especially good - go for the biggie upsized version. Trust me you can probably feed two people for lunch and dinner! Oh, it's BYO too. :)
