Sweet Mother’s Kitchen is a go-to for Wellingtonians on the hunt for southern, Cajun cooking, like chicken gumbo, po-boys and quesadillas. The food is consistently excellent, and reasonably priced for the generous portions – and you can’t go past its wide selection of sweet pies, including pumpkin, apple, pecan and Key lime, for dessert.

Despite its notoriously patchy service, Sweet Mother’s Kitchen is a go-to for Wellingtonians on the hunt for southern, Cajun cooking, like chicken gumbo, po-boys and quesadillas. The food is consistently excellent, and reasonably priced for the generous portions – and with its ramshackle decor and indie playlists, it’s surprisingly hip for somewhere so established.

In terms of dessert, Sweet Mother’s Kitchen is best-known for its wide selection of pies, including pumpkin, apple, pecan and Key lime. But its beignets – New Orleans-style donuts, dusted in icing sugar – make a fantastic accompaniment to a milky coffee and the Sunday paper.

The curly fries at Sweet Mother’s Kitchen are, in a word, incredible. The spicy flavour of these spiral joys renders the shape irrelevant. Enjoy with a peanut butter milkshake.

Curly fries. Yes, they have curly fries - and they just might be some of the best fries ever. They also come with this amazing aioli which literally tastes different every single time you eat it. Bravo!

A Wellington institution, Sweet Mother’s does a great brunch. The Mr always gets the waffles, which comes with fried chicken and maple syrup! I often switch it up between their tacos and po boys - a crispy baguette with fish (or whatever meat you choose), crispy lettuce and their amazing Creole mayo. Ordered with the curly fries and a dessert and you’re set to conquer the rest of the day! The staff are hip and helpful and there are loads on the walls to keep your wandering eye entertained. You can’t book so you’ll just have to try your luck.

Just about anything on the menu here will help cure what ails you: nom a Po Boy, waffles (with fried chicken!), nachos, eggs, a burrito or even the mac n cheese, if you’re up to it. Get back on the horse with a cider or Bloody Mary.
