The Tangihua Forest is gigantic. You can see it from the coast, you can see it inland. Located on the outskirts of Maungakaramea and South Dargaville. There are many tracks to choose from depending on skill and fitness levels, one thing they all have in common is that they allow you to be completely engulfed in the magnificent forest that is The Tangihua’s. My favorite track would have to be the Trig walk, which leads you through small kauri forest, dense native bush tracks to a spectacular view where the trig resides. From this point you can look out over all of Whangarei and the residing inland/farmland. It is hands down my favorite trek in Northland.

Now this place can only be described as epic. 7 tracks link a vast, distinctive, rugged landmark covering 3,000 hectares of forest, some kauri. The tracks range anywhere from an hour to 4 hours, it’s really what you make it! My friends and I spent the entire day here hiking to the giant trig in the center of it all and back - such an experience. I recommend packing a lunch and bringing plenty of water for this one!
