Obsessed with musical theatre during my childhood, The Civic was - and still is - one of my favourite theatres in Auckland. The stained glass, intricate ceiling embellishments, ornate staircases and twinkling lights above have made every show I've ever seen here something truly magical. A classic theatre and a real Auckland gem.
The Civic Theatre exudes a Renaissance charm, with amazing interior decor reminiscent of an outdoor amphitheatre under the stars. It houses the annual NZ International Film Festival as well as many international musicals and shows. It is in close proximity to wondrous eating places that is perfect for the after - show or pre - show meal #darkhorse
If you are luckily enough to see one of the International Film Festival screenings at the Civic then you will know just how amazing of a cinema going experience it is. If you haven’t had the chance yet, make sure you factor that in when next choosing your film. When you are inside make sure to look up, that ceiling is absolutely stunning!
I’ve been here numerous times for various different shows, and every time I’m blown away by how amazing the inside of the building is. From the foyer and staircases through to the main auditorium, the Civic oozes old school elegance and class. And there’s always some awesome show on to go see, whether you’re into theatre, ballet, music, or any number of other things. Love it.
Built in the depression and decorated like a Rajasthani castle, but with neon-backlit Buddhas, elephant light fittings, and a replica of the southern night sky on the theatre ceiling, The Civic is unique in the world and a place where the price of admittance has already paid itself before the show even starts.
