This bar could not get any more Indie/Hipster really. Been to several birthdays at this place and you'd be forgiven for thinking if you've stumbled into some dingy student flat on K Road. I think that's half of the charm. The seats are dilapidated, the interior kinda smells and I'm not even sure if the Cider I ordered is really cold or lukewarm. I guess the students and struggling artists will feel right at home.

I'd suggest you try the bars in Ponsonby, you'll find a nice overpriced fizzy yellow beer there.

Or an artificially sweetened cold fizzy cider if that's you're thing.

If you are a suit looking for a "wine cellar" similar to Didas with a wine bible and staff who know their Syrah from their Shiraz, the name is in fact misleading. Yes it is underground and yes the owner's family is in the biz, but the truth is, people don't come here for the wine. In fact I have had the odd off wine or corked wine, but that is not the point of this particular wine cellar.  After 7 or so years, the wine cellar and it's louder cousin, the Whammy Bar (adjoining, and owned by the same guy), has become something of a K road institution. It's what you would call a dive. A dive with heart. It is part of trifecta of hipster hang-outs, which includes DOC bar further up the road. The owner is a huge supporter of local music, but mainly the kind that doesn't fit the mainstream, like indie, experimental or folk. They even host a night called Vitamin S where improvisation is the name of the game.  The crowd is young, slightly grubby and definitely hipster, with the odd hapless student thrown in for good measure. Most nights there is live music of some description and walking in, you feel like you are in Berlin rather than Auckland, with the deconstructed, shabby decor. Almost like a post-apocalyptic bunker. If you want somewhere slightly off-centre, that is.
