There aren’t many coffee establishments out there with an outside area fit to take whatever the elements throw at it, but Cafe 39 on Ponsonby Road is definitely the exception. Their back courtyard is the perfect place to while away the time on a sunny winter’s day, with shelter and ample seating for even big groups. The coffee is not too shabby either, so pop in if you’re passing by.
I enjoyed seeing a few different options on the menu but the food didn't convince me. One dish was rather cold when it arrived at our table and the taste couldn't make up for it. Only the pesto and the hash browns were nice. You might see the colour of the sauce and the salmon on the picture. Unfortunately it tasted as it looked - like packaged food relying on food colouring rather than quality. It somehow also didn't settle well in my stomach. I liked the large wooden table in the backyard, but not the look of the other tables and definitely not the uncomfy metal chairs. As we know from Little & Fridays how nice outdoors toilets can look, this one proves that some cafes just don't care.
I used to work in the area so whenever I had a day when I needed to treat myself, I'd jump over to Cafe 39 and order their signature Chicken, Bacon & Avocado open sandwich. Sounds pretty plain enough except they use these amazing honey cured bacon that really makes the sandwich stand out. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Also, it used to be a place for minor celeb watching, though I'm not sure if it's the case anymore.
