Nelson is the gateway to the Abel Tasman, and Wilson’s do a great job of getting people out in to the park. They have excellent day walk options - drop off and pick up, in between which you walk between the park’s beautiful sandy beaches, have a picnic on the sand and introduce your family to the delights of Nelson’s best known National Park. Wilson’s also have kayak hire, multi day itineraries and can arrange accommodation in the park.

We only had a couple of days in the Abel Tasman area so we looked into doing one of the day cruises that take you to all the different bays (ideal for those of us who are a bit too lazy for hiking). We decided to go with Wilsons as they seemed to have the best facilities on their boats (toilets yay). The boat picked us up on Kaiteriteri beach at 1pm. We had a great seat upstairs on the boat and got to see all the gorgeous bays along the Abel Tasman coast, as well as some seal watching around Tonga Island. The boat pulled into many of the bays giving us some great photo opportunities (see photo). Relaxing on the deck of the boat and watching the beautiful beaches and many kayakers go by is definitely my idea of a great day. (There was also a lower deck which was great for when it got too windy to sit upstairs). Available downstairs was a selection of food and drinks and there was some interesting commentary telling us a little about the histories of the families who initially inhabited the area. The boat dropped us off in one of the bays on the way back where we had a short walk to the gorgeous Barks Bay. We then got picked up and taken back to Kaiteriteri beach. Overall, a perfect day!
