Foodie weekend in Matakana
- 125Matakana Village Farmers' MarketMatakanaStart the day off right by browsing through the stalls at Matakana Village Farmers' Market and tasting all the delicious samples on offer for breakfast. The early bird catches the pastries, so arrive as early as possible to beat the crowds and reward yourself with a good strong coffee.
- 23Ascension Wine EstateMatakanaFor a memorable and delicious meal in a stunning setting, treat yo' self to lunch at Ascension Wine Estate. Their menu is always changing to reflect seasonal produce, so you're tasting the freshest and best food. Paired (of course) with one of Ascension Estate's own boutique wines.
- 326Leigh Sawmill CafeLeighWhat's a trip to Matakana without stopping by Leigh Sawmill? Grab a pizza for dinner and a round or two of their local brew to wash it down, and catch a gig while you're there. Perfect.

Best of Korean food and karaoke
- 110Nol Bu Ne RestaurantAuckland CentralOf all the many fantastic and authentic Korean eateries in central Auckland, Nol Bu Ne stands out as one of the best. When my boyfriend and I feel like Korean, it's off to "the red roof" we go for moreish bibimbap, sizzling hot plates of spicy pork and bulgogi, and kimchi fried rice. The portions are generous and service is prompt and friendly. There's a chiller full of Korean ice blocks and ice creams which are a perfect sweet end to your meal - my favourite is the classic Melona!
- 21The Zoo Karaoke BarNewmarketI only have great memories from the couple of times I've been to The Zoo. There's a great variety of Chinese dishes to choose from, and their song selection is always current. It's the perfect place to settle in with a group of friends for a night of belting out anthems, pop hits and even the odd ballad!
- 31K Box Karaoke BarAuckland CentralK Box Karaoke Bar is a great place for a more upmarket karaoke experience. Happy hour is from noon to 9 PM, so get in early and take advantage of the drink deals!
- 49Mojung RestaurantHendersonMojung Restaurant is all about the little details. From the moment you walk in, you're met with friendly and warm service and complimentary pickles while you begin the difficult task of choosing what tempting dishes to order from the menu. Traditional Korean hot rice tea is served in the winter to warm you up, while in the cooler months chilled cinnamon tea is served. The meals are fantastic value, and of course the banchan (side dishes) are refilled as often as you need. Wherever you may live, Mojung is a great reason to make the trek out to West Auckland.
- 54Plush KTVAuckland CentralNestled away in Upper Queen Street is this little gem of a karaoke bar. Luxuriously fitted out, it's also the best spot for a low-key hen's night. Order a selection of tasty snacks and drinks and settle in for some serious singalongs!

My flavour faves - best restaurants
- 1121Depot Eatery & Oyster BarAuckland CentralThe boyfriend and I come here so often that we have our Depot strategy sorted - a couple of freshly-shucked oysters each, followed by a couple of small plates (sliders usually feature), one large plate and a side of potato skins, all washed down with a carafe of their tap wine. Get in early or be prepared to wait, but know that it’s totally worth it!
- 257Love the atmosphere and food at Coco’s. They must do something magical to their food because everything they make is from fairly simple ingredients, but tastes so amazing. Best steak and home fries in town!
- 35Xian Food Bar Auckland CentralAuckland CentralI always get the same thing whenever I come here - the braised pork biang biang noodles. It’s a big bowl of chewy noodles and melt-in-your-mouth pork with a hint of sharp coriander and chilli heat. It’s cool how the chef hand-pulls each order of noodles before tossing it in the wok. I love it so much that I have cravings for it when I’m away from home!
- 414Orphans KitchenGrey LynnCame here for dinner with the boyfriend as we had read many glowing reviews of the place and were keen to check it out. The live-edge high wood tables and sheepskin-covered stools gives this place a relaxed vibe but the food is definitely serious, as in seriously good. The menu is small but perfectly formed - we chose two little plates and two bigger ones to share. They were all amazing and beautifully presented but what stands out for me is the tuna belly plate (complemented with grapefruit) and the rye gnocchi - pillowy-soft yet slightly crispy at the same time. Amazing. Will definitely be back to try more of their ever-changing menu, and more of that gnocchi!
- 513Mentatz Japanese Ramen RestaurantAuckland CentralThe combination of delicious food, great prices and proximity to where I live means that Mentatz usually sees me stopping by at least a couple of times a month. Love the pork katsu don, but the ramen is also great for when I’m in a noodle mood.
