How structured data helps AI understand your business

Structured data is the machine-readable layer behind your website that tells AI engines exactly what your business is, what it offers, and where it is. Most NZ businesses don't have it — which is an opportunity.

Humans read copy. Machines read structure.

A human visiting your website reads the headings, looks at the photos, and understands you're a plumber in Ponsonby. A search engine or AI system sees HTML — and unless that HTML is structured, it has to guess.

Structured data (often called schema or JSON-LD) is a layer of code that explicitly tells machines: this is a LocalBusiness, the name is X, the address is Y, the phone is Z, the services are A, B, and C. No guessing required.

When an AI engine reads structured data, it can extract your business facts with confidence. When it has to infer them from prose, it's less certain — and less likely to cite you.

The schema types that matter most

For a NZ business, the most valuable structured data types are: LocalBusiness (or a more specific subtype like Electrician, Plumber, Restaurant), which defines your name, address, phone, hours, and geo-coordinates; Service or Offer, which lists what you sell; and FAQPage, which answers common customer questions in a machine-readable way.

Review and AggregateRating schema signal social proof. BreadcrumbList helps engines understand where your page sits in your site. And if you have an NZBN, including it in your structured data creates a direct link to the official register.

You don't need all of these. But the more accurate structured data you provide, the easier you make it for AI to understand and recommend you.

What if you don't have a technical website?

Not every NZ business has a developer who can add JSON-LD to their site. That's okay — structured data can also live on platforms that already provide it.

A verified Localist profile generates structured data for your business automatically: LocalBusiness schema, services, location, NZBN, and FAQs — all machine-readable, all connected to the official register. You don't need to touch code.

This is one of the fastest wins available: if your own website isn't structured, a well-maintained platform profile can carry the structured-data load for you until it is.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code to add structured data?+

Not necessarily. If you use a website builder like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace, many have schema built in or available via plugins. And a verified Localist profile generates structured data for your business automatically — no code required from you.

Will structured data guarantee I appear in AI search?+

No. Structured data makes it easier for AI engines to understand your business, which improves your odds, but it doesn't guarantee a citation. It's one signal among several — corroboration, reviews, and a current register record matter too.

What's the difference between structured data and SEO?+

SEO is the broad practice of improving your visibility in search. Structured data is a specific technical technique within SEO — it's the machine-readable layer that helps search engines and AI understand your content. Good SEO includes good structured data.
