Localist NZ — 16 years
Our Story16Years of Local Trust

Sixteen years of finding local.

From a print directory delivered to Auckland letterboxes to the AI-ready knowledge graph powering New Zealand business discovery. This is the story of how Localist evolved — through failure, learning, and a stubborn belief that local matters.

A directory became infrastructure.

Most companies don't survive a $28 million write-off. Localist did — because the idea behind it was always bigger than the business model of the moment. The way people find local businesses kept changing, and Localist kept changing with it. Here's how we got here.

The Print Beginning

New Zealand Post launches Localist as an Auckland print business directory — five hard-copy editions, suburb by suburb. A bold bet that the future of local discovery still had ink on its fingers. CEO Blair Glubb, fresh from Yellow, leads the charge.

Going Digital

Localist.co.nz goes live. An online service directory with suburb-specific community content and hyperlocal advertising. The tagline captures the spirit: "Where locals go to find out what's good around here." Yellow fires back with Yellow Local. The battle for local begins.

The Directory Wars

Localist and Yellow Local go head-to-head for local eyeballs. Localist grows to 100,000+ SME listings, most free. People "love" their favourite cafes, plumbers, and shops — a social recommendation layer before social was everywhere. But Google is quietly winning the real war.

A New Owner

NZ Post sells Localist to a management group led by CEO Christina Domecq. NZ Post wrote off $28 million. The critics called it a failure. The team called it learning fast — the most important lesson in innovation. Localist goes 100% digital, drops print for good.

Built for communities
2015 — 2023

Community & Trust

Under independent ownership, Localist becomes a genuine community platform — free websites for small businesses, charities, and community groups. "Helping good businesses get seen, trusted, and chosen — without pressure, hype, or unnecessary cost." 24,000+ Kiwis follow along.

The AI Shift

Search changes fundamentally. People ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI — not just Google. If a business isn't represented in the data layer AI reads, it's invisible. Localist pivots from directory to knowledge graph. NZBN integration begins. The mission sharpens.

The Knowledge Graph

Localist becomes New Zealand's verified business knowledge graph — 933,995+ businesses mapped, authority scoring, AI Health Checks, owner-controlled records connected to the Companies Office register. Not a directory. The infrastructure that makes sure NZ businesses are found, understood, and trusted in the AI era.

The next chapter is AI.
