What is an AI citation (and why it matters for your business)
An AI citation is when ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI names your business as the answer to a question. It's the new equivalent of a page-one Google ranking — and it's measured differently.
The new page one
For years, the holy grail of online visibility was ranking on page one of Google. If you weren't there, you effectively didn't exist for that search.
AI citations are the equivalent for the AI-search era. When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a question and names your business, that's a citation. When it doesn't, you're invisible to that query — even if your website ranks well on traditional Google.
The difference is that AI citations are harder to measure. There's no rank-tracking tool that shows you 'position 3 for best plumber Auckland' in ChatGPT. You have to ask the AI, or use a monitoring service.
Citation vs. link
A traditional link says 'this page is relevant.' An AI citation says 'this business is the answer.' That's a stronger signal — it's an endorsement, not just a reference.
But AI citations are also more fragile. An AI might cite your business today and a competitor tomorrow, depending on how the underlying data has shifted. Consistency across sources is what makes a citation stick.
This is why maintaining accurate, corroborated data matters more in the AI era than in the link era. A broken address or stale service list can cause an AI to lose confidence and cite someone else.
How businesses earn AI citations
AI citations tend to go to businesses that are easy to verify (consistent name, address, NZBN), well-structured (machine-readable data, not just marketing copy), independently described (not only self-described), and actively maintained (recent reviews, current hours, live website).
They also favour businesses with unique, specific facts — a particular specialisation, a credential, an accreditation — that distinguish them from generic competitors.
You can't buy AI citations. But you can build the conditions that make them more likely: verified data, structured profiles, and corroboration across trusted sources.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if AI is citing my business?+
The most direct way is to ask the AI engines yourself — search for your business name and for queries like 'best [your trade] in [your city]' in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. There are also emerging monitoring tools, but manual checks are the most reliable starting point. Localist's free AI Scan does an initial check for you.
Are AI citations the same as backlinks?+
No. A backlink is a link from one website to another. An AI citation is when an AI engine names your business as the answer to a question. Citations are harder to earn and harder to track, but they represent a stronger form of endorsement.
If I rank well on Google, will AI cite me too?+
Not necessarily. AI search and traditional Google search use different signals. A business can rank well on Google but be invisible to AI if its data isn't well-corroborated or structured. Increasingly, the two are converging, but they're not identical.
