How businesses are valued in New Zealand
Business valuation is part art, part science. The most common methods use industry multiples — multiplying your revenue or profit (EBITDA) by a factor that's typical for your industry.
Revenue multiples are simpler but less precise. They work well for businesses with consistent revenue but variable profit margins. Typical revenue multiples range from 0.3× to 2.5× depending on industry.
EBITDA multiples are more accurate for profitable businesses. EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortisation) represents your operating profit. Typical EBITDA multiples range from 3× to 8× depending on industry, growth, and risk.
This calculator provides an estimate only. A formal business valuation by a qualified valuer or business broker considers many more factors: assets, liabilities, contracts, customer concentration, market position, growth prospects, and more.

EBITDA stands for Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortisation. It's a measure of your business's operating profitability. To calculate it, take your net profit and add back interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation expenses.
