One of my favourite theatres in Auckland. They always have a great selection of indie and festival-type films playing if blockbusters just aren’t doing it for you, and the bar is well-stocked.

Down below the Auckland Central Library is a tiny independent cinema with bright silky curtains draped on the walls where at any given point in time you can catch about three art house films that they will be screening. Home of the Auckland Film Society for many a year.

I love the selection of international films they have on here - so different to the mainstream cinemas. And the people are so nice!

Auckland's "only dedicated art-house cinema," the Academy may be tiny, but it's one of Auckland's best movie theatres. It's also cheaper to go before 5pm on weekdays, so catch an afternoon screening if you're able, and make the most of the quieter/cheaper times!

Academy Cinemas is a fabulous place to duck underground from the CBD hustle and bustle and experience some first rate art house cinema. Grab a cold one and an ice cream and experience the brilliance of a cinema with soul.

Thanks to Time Out Bookstore, Auckland Film Society proudly presents Monte Hellman's classic existential road movie. With its gorgeous widescreen compositions and sophisticated look at obsession and emotional dislocation, this stripped-down narrative from director Monte Hellman is one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema, and possibly the greatest road movie ever made.
